Debugging 503 errors?

Does anyone have any advice? I'm doing some latency testing using jmeter - I get periodic 503 errors when going through the proxy, and the logs don't really have much of an indication of where the 503 is coming from. I can't seem to replicate the 503 when I test directly against the server.

Suggestions?
