check mysql

Are there any plans to implement a check for mysql? Are there any workarounds that would check for the status of mysqld? Something like ldirectord has where it connects to mysql and checks an specific table. Is there a way to specify custom checks? Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is the last piece of my puzzle.
